Like most writers, I've been writing most of my life. My first articles came out in the early 1980's while I was completing a Masters in Divinity at Harvard Divinity School. My first grant proposals, in support of public affairs television, came soon after. In 1987 I became Grant Writer and then Senior Writer for The Franklin Institute Science Museum in Philadelphia. As a humanist with a passion for science and science fiction, I couldn't have made a better choice. I started work three years before the Futures Center wing (now the Mandell Center) opened, which gave me an ideal opportunity to delve into future technologies and to develop not only fundraising material but also exhibit labels, educational materials, public relations materials and more--all in support of a truly exciting project. Once the Futures Center was a reality, I left the Franklin to launch my own business. Since 1991, I have written about a vast range of scientific and humanistic topics for clients as diverse as National Geographic, Lucent Technologies, the University of Pennsylvania and Scholastic, Inc. My projects are as broad-ranging as my clients, including writing, editing, and developing books, articles, scripts, web content, curricula, exhibit labels, grant proposals, marketing materials, and more. Just as diverse are the topics I write about -- from ancient Chinese culture to undersea archaeology to human evolution to the biology of snails. Every day is a learning adventure; every client offers new challenges and opportunities. In 2006, I became the About.com Guide to Autism for About.com, a New York Times Company. This has been a wonderful experience for me, as I gain daily experience in blogging, web writing, and search engine optimization. It's also a wonderful way for me to learn more about autism - a topic that's near and dear to my heart - and to connect more fully with the autism community. That same year, my husband Peter Cook and I launch Explorations Unlimited, LLC, a videography and multimedia company. Together, we offer a range of services including consulting, scriptwriting, videography, editing, production, web content development and DVD copying. I am married, with two young children -- Tommy,11, and Sara, 8. Tommy is a wonderful, bright, and creative boy who was diagnosed at age 3 1/2 with high functioning autism. I am actively involved with creating programs and opportunities for Tommy and his peers (click on "Camp Outlook" for more on this). We live in beautiful Falmouth, Massachusetts, in Cape Cod. |
